The blind end (6) of the rivet nut (1) is deformable, extends beyond the screw thread (3), and has a hole (7) which is smaller than the diameter (8) of the mandrel head (9). The diameter of the mandrel head is smaller than the minor diameter of the screw thread. The extended blind end can be conical, and can have a tapered seat for the mandrel head. An extension (13) of the tool nose (12) centralizes the rivet nut. On operating the tool, the mandrel travel (11) deforms the relatively thin-walled plain shank (4) to fix the rivet, and the blind end deforms outward allowing the mandrel head to pass through the hole, and the mandrel to be withdrawn ready for the next rivet nut.
