The control method responds to the detected difference between the required pressure value (PS) and the actual pressure (P) within the fuel reservoir for the common-rail fuel injection system, supplied with fuel via the high pressure fuel pump, for switching between two different operating modes, in which respective pressure regulators (220,225) are used for regulating the pressure within the fuel reservoir. An Independent claim for an IC engine control device is also included.
