The testing method has a pressure regulating valve on the output side of the common-rail pressure reservoir held open during an initiation phase (A) with zero engine revs (34), before detecting the pressure in the common-rail pressure reservoir over a first measuring interval (B) after starting the high pressure pump and a second measuring interval (C) after disconnection of the high pressure pump, with the injection valves and the pressure-regulating valve held closed during both intervals. The measured pressure values and/or pressure characteristics are compared with reference values for detecting a fault in the common-rail fuel injection system. An independent claim for an engine control provided with a control interface for testing a common-rail fuel injection system is also included.
