The system has an obstacle detector, a contact probability detector, an automatic braking arrangement activated if the contact potential detector detects a likely contact with an obstacle, a steering activity detector, a vehicle characteristic controller for supporting the driver's steering actions to improve the vehicle's maneuverability and an avoidance probability detector. If avoidance is detected as possible the vehicle characteristic controller permits the avoidance process.
