The shock absorbing device has a sliding capsule(B) equipped with a collar section and attached to the body of the vehicle, and a steering column holder(A) with a shock absorption opening which is elongated in the steering column's longitudinal direction. A first shock absorbing section has a spike-form element(4A) close to a fixing hole section(3) in the holder and in the event of a collision the collar section of the sliding capsule bends the spike-form element and presses into a second shock absorbing section to absorb the impact energy.
