Prepn. of substd. 4-methylidene cinnamic acid derivs. of formula (I) comprises reacting an aryl halide of formula (V) with an acrylic acid deriv. of formula (VI) in the presence of a Pd catalyst: R = CN or COR1; R1 = OH, O-(6-10C)aryl, O-(1-20C)alkyl, NH2, NH-(6-10C)aryl, NH-(1-20C)alkyl, N-(1-20C)alkyl-(6-10C)aryl or N-di(1-20C)alkyl; R' = H, 1-20C alkyl or R; R'' = H, 1-20C alkyl, 6-20C aryl or a gp. of formula (a); Z = gps. of formula (b), (c) or (d); R1' = H or Me; and X1 = Cl, Br or iodine.
