A system for monitoring a swimming pool to prevent drowning accidents, including sensing means (D1, D2, D3) for providing electrical signals forming images of bodies immersed in the pool water; means (10) for digitising the resulting images; means (10) for compressing the digital image data; means (11a, 11b) for storing the digital image data at a series of times; means (12, 13) for comparing digitised images of a single body at a series of times; means (12, 13) for estimating the nature of a body, the path of the body and changes in the position of the body on the basis of the series of images; and decision means (12, 13) for operating alarm means should the path or movement of the body being observed give cause for concern.
