The catalyst used in the hydrodeasotization and hydrogenation of aromatic compounds from petroleum cuts has a high resistance to sulfur- and nitrogen-containing compounds. The deazotization and hydrogenation of petroleum aromatic cuts with a boiling range of 90-500 deg C, contaminated by nitrogen contents of 1-1000 ppm and sulfur contents of 1-1000 ppm and having an aromatic content of 5-70% comprises contacting with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst comprising a zirconia (ZrO2) support impregnated with 0.1-2% platinum (Pt). Independent claims are also included for the preparation of the catalyst and its use.
