Identifying species of Leishmania, useful e.g. for diagnosis and selection of treatment, using a limited set of isoenzymes or amplification primers for differentiation

Method for identifying species of Leishmania by identifying isoenzymes (I) and/or amplicons (II) from, respectively, proteins or DNA extracted from cultured promastigotes derived from an isolate, uses a limited set of (I) and/or amplification primers (AP) that are discriminatory for characteristics of a broad spectrum of Leishmania species. An Independent claim is also included for a diagnostic kit for the new method containing: (i) a set of 5 enzymes and/or at least two of 9 specified RAPD primers; (ii) reagents, solutions and buffers required for electrophoretic separation; and (iii) instructions for use.
