Detection of sulfate-reducing bacteria (A) comprises extracting DNA or RNA from a test sample and detecting at least a fragment of the gene (I) for adenylyl sulfate reductase (APSR) or of the mRNA transcript from (I) to indicate presence of (A). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) oligonucleotides (ON) having essentially any of the 25 nucleotide sequences defined in the specification; and (2) plasmid that contains two sequences specific for a fragment of (I) which flank a region that is not a fragment of (I).
