PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a methyl acetate and acetic acid synthesis catalyst by a liquid phase reaction of methanol and dimethyl ether with carbon monoxide with a simplified process by carrying rhodium on a carrier composed of a basic compound. ;SOLUTION: The basic compound has base points on the surface of the compound and adsorb an acidic compound such as carbon dioxide. As the compound, hydrotalcite, zinc oxide, cerium oxide, zirconium oxide, alumina and the like are mentioned. The average particle diameter of carried rhodium is usually about ≤5 nm, preferably about ≤3 nm. The carrying quantity of rhodium is usually about 0.1-5 wt.%, preferably about 0.2-3 wt.% against the total weight of the carrier and rodium. The dispersibility of rhodium is increased with the decrease of the carrying quantity of rhodium. That is, the catalytic activity per rhodium is increased with the decrease of the particle diameter of rhodium.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
