PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide both a method for observing a fluorescent substance using a light-emitting diode as a light source being supposed to have a wide use in the whole biotechnological studies such as early selection of gene transfer individual, confirmation of expression characteristics of new gene, etc., an apparatus for irradiating an exciting light. ;SOLUTION: (1) This method for observing a fluorescent substance uses a light-emitting diode as a light source for excitation of a living cell into which a gene encoding a protein emitting a fluorescence by irradiation with an exciting light is transferred. (2) This method for recognizing a gene transfer living cell uses a light-emitting diode as a light source for excitation of the living cell. (3) This method for verifying a transferred gene expression characteristics in the living cell uses a light-emitting diode as a light source for excitation of the living cell. (4) This method for verifying a transferred gene expression characteristics in a gene transfer individual uses a light-emitting diode as a light source for excitation of a gene transfer individual into which a gene encoding a protein emitting a fluorescence by irradiation with an exciting light is transferred.
