PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition capable of providing orientation functions by optical orientation without carrying out a rubbing treatment, excellent in heat resistance, reliability, etc., and useful for liquid crystal nipping substrates and liquid crystal display devices by including a specific polyimide or its precursor. ;SOLUTION: This composition comprises preferably 1-20 wt.% of a polyimide having a recurring unit represented by formula I or II (X is a tetravalent organic group; Y is a bivalent organic group) and further a bivalent organic group such as formula III (R1 to R4 are each H, CH3 or CH2CH3) or the like as a part of Y or its precursor. The above polyimide precursor is obtained by reacting a tetracarboxylic dianhydride (e.g. 3,3',4,4'- benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride) with a diamine compound (e.g. 2,4,6- trimetyl-1,3-phenylenediamine) preferably at ≤100°C.
