PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical encoder which can be manufactured at reduced costs, in which the area of a semiconductor chip is consumed little on the side of a detector, which maintains the advantage of a known device, which maintains nonsensitivity with reference to a change in light intensity and which detects a linear motion or a rotational motion quantitatively.;SOLUTION: The detector is provided with three optical receivers. Optical receiving regions in the three optical receivers are adjacent to each other so as to be arranged in parallel with reference to the direction of the raster device.
