PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a genetic engineering method useful for the modification of vegetable characters represented by male sterility by using a gene specific to the tissue of anther. ;SOLUTION: The objective genetic engineering method comprises a step to prepare a vegetable expression cassette containing a nucleic acid selected from (i) a DNA having a specific base sequence, (ii) a DNA hybridizing with the DNA having the base sequence (i) under stringent condition and coding for a transcription factor controlling the development of pollen and (iii) a DNA consisting of a fragment of the DNA (i) or (ii) and a promoter connected to the nucleic acid in actionable state, a step to produce a vegetable cell having an endogenous transcription factor controlling the development of pollen wherein the gene coding for the endogenous transcription factor is hybridized with the nucleic acid under stringent condition, a step to transduce the expression cassette into the vegetable cell, a step to grow the vegetable cell to a vegetable and a step to select a vegetable having suppressed expression of the endogenous transcription factor.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
