The invention relates to a method for the preparation and/or purification of clavulanic acid and of its pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester. It includes the elimination of the solid substances from the clavulanic acid to fermentation nutrient until the production of a first filtrate from which the solid particles are removed by ultrafiltration. As a result a second filtrate is produced which is concentrated by the removal of water and is treated until the isolation of clavulanic acid or its pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester. The first filtrate is filtered by making use of an ultrafiltration membrane having molecular weight from 10 to 30 kD and discharge of the passed flow from 10 to 30 lm-2 h-1. 7 claims
