The brucite-structured metal hydroxide comprises nickel hydroxide as the main component and at least one trivalent metal from the group of Co, Fe, Al, Ga, In, Sc, Y and La in an amount of 12 to 30 atomic%, based on the sum of the metal components including nickel. The process consists in precipitating the mixed hydroxide with the pyroaurite structure from the corresponding salt solutions, suspending the precipitated product in at least 0.5 molar alkaline solution, separating from the solution and drying.
