The roller shutter is guided between two upright guide rails and has a roller at the top to roll and unroll the shutter. The light gate is positioned across the outside of the shutter as well as over the inside to monitor obstructions eg. hands. The security and safety system shuts off the servo motor when an obstruction is identified. The light gate uses one light beam, or one IR beam. The light source (8) is in one rail, with the detector (9) in the same rail but on the other side of the shutter. The other rail has two plane reflecting mirrors to turn the beam back over the other side of the shutter.
