A Bowie and Dick type prevacuum steamsterilization test pack for insertion into asterilization chamber for indicating the presence ofunacceptable levels of uncondensable gas comprises ahousing, a heat sink and an indicator means. Thehousing defines a single chamber having a large openend, a relatively small closed end opposite the openend, and a sidewall smoothly tapering from the open endto the closed end. The heat sink is disposed in thechamber and extends substantially from the open end tothe closed end to define a path through which the steamtravels from the open end toward the closed end, thepath being adapted to provide sufficient exposure ofthe steam to the heat sink so that the steam condenseswithin the path, releasing any noncondensable gasassociated with the steam, forcing the noncondensablegas so released toward and concentrating suchnoncondensable gas within the closed end. Means aredisposed in the chamber adjacent the closed end forindicating the presence of noncondensable gasconcentrated therein.
