A method and apparatus for interrogating a resonator to monitor resonance characteristics in an energy efficient manner over a period of time, wherein the apparatus comprises a pulse generator (10) which triggers pulsing element (12) and simultaneously informs detector (24) that a pulse has issued. The pulse enters input port (1) of a resonant element, which comprises a SAW device (16), via pad (14), which is optimally a circulator or a resistive element, whereupon the pulse is transduced to a corresponding acoustic signal which transverses device (16) and exits, via output port (2), to optional amplifier (20) and then to detector (24). Detector (24) contains an analog-to-digital converter to sample the SAW device's output, which determines either the resonance characteristics and/or the quality factor of the SAW device (16).
