The invention relates to a laser diode with a rigid waveguide and with one aluminum oxide insulation layer (10a, 10b, 11a, 11b) each as the aperture on both sides of the active layer (3) in the barrier layers (2, 4). The aluminum oxide apertures are characterized by a structure in which one strip-shaped portion each of the corresponding layer level is devoid of aluminum oxide in the zone provided for the waveguide, thereby simultaneously optimizing the electrical confinement and the optical confinement. The inventive diode also allows for a simple realization of the tapered shape of the waveguide.
