The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for determining the structure of a disk drive (100) head-assembly (HDA). The HDA includes an array of rotatable disks 106 and includes an actuator assembly 110 adjacent to the disk which is capable of moving the maximum number of heads 120 in a fully populated structure and a reduced number . Each head is positioned at a specific head position. During each spin up of the disk, the servo circuit 148 includes the head when the disk drive is fully populated and determines the impedance of the selected head position that does not include the head when the disk drive is populated removed.
