ANTIVIRAL GALACTAN SULFATE POLYSACCHARIDES ISOLATED FROM MERETRIX LUSORIA

PURPOSE: Provided are antiviral galactan sulfate polysaccharides isolated from Meretrix lusoria, and a method for producing extracts of Korean Meretrix lusoria from the Meretrix lusoria using a protease and isolating/purifying galactan sulfate polysaccharides from the extracts. CONSTITUTION: The antiviral galactan is purified by the steps of (i) forming a complex from Meretrix lusoria using ammonium salt and precipitating the complex to form a precipitate, (ii) dissolving the precipitate in water to form a solution and dialyzing the solution, and (iii) removing binding proteins from the solution using sodium hydroxide. Pharmaceutical composition containing the galactan sulfate polysaccharides as an active ingredient is useful for treatment of virus infection disease or acquired immunodeficiency disease. The extracts of Meretrix lusoria are prepared by dissolving dried Meretrix lusoria using protease as an enzyme source.
