The backrest (2) for the bench passenger seat (1) has an incorporated armrest (3) which is pivoted about a horizontal axis (4) between a working position and a stowed position in which it fits into a recess (2c) in the backrest. The latter axis is displaced vertically upwards during movement of the armrest between its working and stowed positions, so that the padded top surface (3a) of the armrest forms the back support for the passenger.
