The overload protection method detects the loading of the friction clutch (22), for indication of an overload condition, for only permitting moving off of the automobile in a given number of gears, e.g. first gear or reverse gear, or for controlling the moving off of the automobile to inhibit overloading of the friction clutch, e.g by limiting the engine revs.
