Fatty acids (I) which directly interact with peroxisome proliferator activated receptors (PPAR) and/or with lipid binding proteins of the 14-15 kDa fatty acid binding protein type are claimed, where (I) are selected from (a) natural isoprenoid- and acetogenin-derived fatty acids (I) with methyl or ethyl branches and (b) synthetic fatty acids having non-natural branching patterns. An Independent claim is included for pro-forms (I') of (I), such as metabolic precursors or esters of (I).
