Process for determining the precious metal content of vehicle exhaust gas catalysts containing platinum group metals in a matrix of oxides that are difficult to melt and silicon dioxide comprises the microwave treatment of a catalyst sample ground to a powder and measuring the precious metal content using optical emission spectrometry, in which the catalyst sample is digested with a mixture of hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and hydrogen fluoride in a combination with the microwaves, the hydrogen fluoride corresponding with the content of the sample of silicon dioxide is exactly measured and the precious metal content is measured directly on the digestion solution without removing the matrix.
