A heat exchanger for use with acid gases is made from steel. The surfaces which come into contact with the gases have a coating of bitumen. An Independent claim is included for a heat exchanger as above, but with a coating of ceramic or metal powder instead of bitumen., preferably silicon carbide; or metal powder, preferably chromium, nickel or chromium/nickel powder.
