Reactor comprises a reactor unit (1) into which the material to be converted and an oxygen-containing gas are introduced; and a heat exchanger (5) for passing the product stream through. The heat exchanger contains a unit for selective oxygen removal from the oxygen-containing crude gas which is in heat contact with the product gas stream and is connected to the reactor unit. Preferred Features: The reactor further comprises a compressor (13) for compressing the oxygen-containing crude gas before injecting into the oxygen removal unit of the heat exchanger; and an expanding unit (18) mechanically coupled to the compressor for the retentate of the oxygen removal unit and/or the cathode waste gas of a coupled fuel cell system.
