The device has a first optical unit (2) with at least one illumination unit having at least one light diode to direct visible red, green and blue light at a given angle (18) to a surface (8) to be measured. A second optical unit (10) at a given angle (17) to the surface has at least one photosensor (13) to detect light reflected from the surface. A filter unit is arranged between the light diodes and the photosensor. A control and evaluation unit controls the measurement process and evaluates at least one characteristic of the reflected light, to characterise the surface. The control and evaluation unit has at least one processor unit and at least one memory unit. An Independent claim is included for a method for using the device.
