A process for measuring and registering physical and chemical changes in microbiological and/or macrobiological metabolisms in organic and/or inorganic substrates owing to natural or substance-induced disturbances, is new. A process for measuring and registering physical and chemical changes in microbiological and/or macrobiological metabolisms in organic and/or inorganic substrates owing to natural or substance-induced disturbances, uses a cylinder of 100-1000 mm length and 80-800 mm diameter. The cylinder is made either of a transparent material, e.g. glass or plastic, or a non-transparent material with 1-4 windows over the entire length of the cylinder. The cylinder has a gas-tight top closure and a fluid and gas permeable bottom. The cylinder walls comprise different access holes of 6-40 mm, which are used for inserting detection and measuring probes and for adding or removing substrate samples, substances and mixtures of substances, e.g. toxins, stimulants and gases for the production of aerobic or anaerobic conditions. The openings in the cylinder wall are organized on 1-15 levels, each level comprising 1-20 openings. The material in the cylinder comprises pourable material with a particle size of = 200 mm, e.g. sand, shingle, soil, compost, sludge, forest earth, hay, peat, dried plant material (e.g. cereal, corn, fruits, spices, roots, sprouted material, leaves and grasses) or dried animal matter (e.g. milk, meat, blood, bone, fur, skin or feathers). At defined time intervals samples are taken from the cylinder and examined for metabolic processes and changes in chemical and physical consistency.
