Production of functionalized polyurethane foams comprises: (a) reacting an isocyanate with a compound having at least two isocyanate-reactive hydrogen atoms and a compound (I) having at least one hydroxy, amino and/or thiol group and at least one group R selected from halogen, carbonyl, ester, anhydride, epoxy, carboxy and sulfone groups; and (b) applying an R-reactive compound (II) to the resulting polyurethane foam so that (II) is covalently bound to (I) through R. An independent claim is also included for polyurethane foams produced by the above method.
