The lifter and transporter for roller pallets (1) comprises mirror-image lifting modules (2, 2a) with grippers (10) and movable support arms which fit under the ends of the pallet. These are mounted on cables which pass over pulleys, which may be independently driven or synchronised. The pallet may also be moved sideways in steps to another lifter/transporter. Plates (11) at the top of the grippers release the pallet when they contact the floor above a conveyor (9). Shock absorbers (19) are mounted at the bases of the cables.
