The method involves detecting a defect in the visual display (1) and outputting a signal (9) detectable by the vehicle driver if the display is defective. The signal for warning the driver is output when the vehicle is in a defined operating state, that is when the vehicle is at rest. The signal can be in the form of steering wheel (3) vibrations.
