An input unit is operated. Current vehicle position and the street in which it is travelling are determined. A priority information and/or estimates are employed to assess the length of the traffic jam. An advisory route is calculated from the current position. Jam avoidance route directions are issued. An independent claim is included for the corresponding equipment, which employs memory (7) in the navigation unit (3), storing anticipated lengths of traffic jams for classes of streets and/or for specific streets.
