The device for folding sheet metal, particularly for motor vehicle bodywork parts, has folding tongs operated by remote force and movably guided along the metal plate part contour. The folding tongs (16) are kinematically uncoupled around a rotary axis (A) vertical to their closure plane and are immovably fixed to a multi-axis industrial robot (2). The robot is of the six axis type and the folding tongs are connected with it to be pivotably movable around the vertical rotary axis to the closure plane. An adapter (14) accommodating the folding tongs via rotary bearings is rigidly connected with the robot hand (4) and the folding tongs.
