Arc generator comprises an arc stream which is regulated via quick semiconductor elements; and a moving electrode for contacting with the sample to ignite the arc. The electrode distance is adjusted independent of the electrode erosion. Preferred Features: The arc temperature is determined by the formation of a quotient of spectral lines and is regulated to a theoretical value via the arc stream. The electrode has several tips. The arc stream is timed with frequencies of 1-300 KHz and a pulse/pause ratio of more than 0.01 and stabilized with these timings.
