Process for making a surface hydrophilic comprises dissolving high molecular weight polyethylene glycol or methyl cellulose in water; adding alcohols or ketones to the solution; applying the solution to the surface to be made hydrophilic; and drying. An Independent claim is also included for the solution for carrying out the process. Preferred Features: The high molecular weight organic solid is dissolved in water with stirring in a water bath and the solution applied by rolling, spraying, screen printing or immersing. Drying is carried out in air.
