The unit has several front airbags (1,2). In the expanded state, the airbags are supported longitudinally along the vehicle shell and form a common restraint system. One of the airbags is a thorax (1) airbag, which is connected to a support airbag (2). The support airbag expands between the front plate (6) of the dashboard (4) unit and a part of the thorax airbag. Preferably, the airbags are folded in separate chambers (3,5) and connected to a common gas generator (7). An independent claim is included for an airbag unit with at least one gas generator and several airbags.
