The device (18) has a common gas producer (20) for alternative filling of a curtain airbag (40) or a front airbag (50). A unit is provided for guiding gas flow from the gas producer into the curtain airbag or into the front airbag, where the curtain airbag and the front airbag exhibit same volume. The front airbag is connected with a motor vehicle (10) by an arrester strap that extends from the front airbag to attachment devices i.e. fastening parts. An upper section of the front airbag is connected with a roof region of the motor vehicle.
