The rivet insertion process involves using a die (12) forming a recess below the lower workpiece and a punch (7) above the upper one. The die is opposite the punch. A rivet is placed between the punch and the upper workpiece. The rivet has an end which can be widened when it is driven into a workpiece. The workpieces are clamped together with a clamping force to bring them firmly into contact. The rivet enters the workpiece, driven by the punch, and the clamping forces are relieved before the force of the punch driving the rivet home reaches its peak value.
