The method involves providing a workpiece (20) made of cast light alloy. The workpiece is provided with rivet region (30) in which a punch rivet (10) is produced. The temperature of the rivet region is increased to preheat temperature in order to increase the ductility of the material of the workpiece in the rivet portion. The punching rivet process is performed with a self-piercing half-hollow rivet in the rivet region of the workpiece to produce the punch rivet joint. An independent claim is included for a connecting device for producing a punch rivet joint.
