The vehicle safety system has a device (3) for detecting an object in the direction in which the vehicle is travelling, a vehicle speed detector (S5), a relationship computation device for detecting an oncoming vehicle based on the output of the object detector and the detected vehicle speed, an arrangement for computing the correct route for the vehicle to pass the oncoming vehicle, a collision position predictor, a collision prevention steering torque computer for determining a lateral motion steering torque required to avoid a collision and an actuator and control arrangement for steering the vehicle accordingly.
