A liquid crystalline medium is a mixture of polar compounds having a positive dielectric anisotropy, whereby at least one compound is a fluorinated compound containing an aromatic ester group. A liquid crystalline medium is a mixture of polar compounds having a positive dielectric anisotropy, whereby at least one compound is of formula (I). R1 = 1-12C alkyl, optionally monosubstituted by CN or CF3 or substituted by halogen, whereby one or more CH2 groups are optionally replaced by -O-, -S-, 1,4-cyclobutyl-, -CH=CH-, -C?=C-, -CO-, -CO-O- or -O-CO-O- such that O atoms do not directly bond to each other, or groups of formula (Ia)-(Ig); L1-L4 = H or F; X = F, Cl, CN, NCS, 1-6C halogenated alkyl, alkenyl or alkoxy; and u = 0 or 1. An Independent claim is included for an electro-optical liquid crystal display containing the medium.
