A liquid crystalline medium is based on a mixture of polar compounds having positive dielectric anisotropy comprising at least one substituted indan compound. A liquid crystalline medium (I) is based on a mixture of polar compounds having positive dielectric anisotropy comprising at least one substituted indan compound of formula (1).
