The structure of the liner (10) exterior facing the crankcase has a roughened surface (12) fused on when casting the liner inserted in the cylindrical mold bore. The fused-on casting is obtained by pouring at a set temperature into the casting appliance with the result that the cast surface making contact with the liner has a temperature of 500-750 deg C. The liner is cast without mechanical treatment and is preferably internally cooled during the casting operation and the gate system is held 20 mm away from the liner. The liner is preferably cast by the lost-foam method or centrifugally.
