Cylinder liner blank production, by subjecting continuously cast fine-grained globular aluminum-silicon alloy strand sections to laminar die casting in the thixotropic state, is new. Cylinder liner blanks of hypereutectic aluminum-silicon alloy are produced by (a) continuously casting a solid strand (43) while subjecting the melt, immediately before and during solidification, to shear motion to cause fine-grained and globular solidification; (b) cutting the cast strand into lengths (54); and (c) reheating the lengths (54) to the solidus temperature and subjecting them to a laminar die casting process in the thixotropic state to form liner blanks (51).
