Cylinder liner blank production, by cutting a continuously cast fine-grained aluminum-silicon alloy tube into lengths which are then formed to tubular semi-finished products, is new. Cylinder liner blanks of hypereutectic aluminum-silicon alloy are produced by (a) continuously casting a tubular strand while subjecting the melt to shear motion to cause fine-grained solidification, the cast strand being internally shaped to the desired open cross-section and cooled, in addition to external shaping and cooling, by a core which extends through the melt to concentrically within the cast strand and which is end cooled; and (b) cutting the fully solidified tubular strand, using a cutting device (46) travelling with the strand, into lengths which are then formed to tubular semi-finished products.
