The head-up display has a light source on a dashboard below the windscreen, a liquid crystal display that filters light from the source and an optical element that directs filtered light to the windscreen that is reflected to form a virtual image. The light source intensity is adjusted to match detected ambient light intensity. The luminance of the light source is controlled depending on the ambient intensity and the light-controlled illumination. The head-up display or HUD has a light source (10b) on the surface of the rear side of an instrument panel (30) below the windscreen (20) to emit light along a path, a liquid crystal display (12) on the rear surface along the light path that filters light from the source to display light containing information and an optical element (40) that directs filtered light to the windscreen to form an image that is reflected by the screen to form a virtual image. The light source intensity is adjusted to match the detected intensity of ambient light and the luminance of the light source is controlled depending on the ambient intensity and the light-controlled illumination.
