Oxide ion conductor with the formula (I) is novel. Formula (I) is : Ln1AxGa1-y+z+wB1yB2zB3wO3-d (I) where, Ln1 = La, Ce, Pr, Nd or Sm; B1 = Mg, Al or In; B2 = Co, Fe, Ni or Cu; B3 = Al, Mg, Co, Ni, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn or Zr; x = 0.05-0.3; y = 0.025-0.29; z = 0.01-0.15; w = 0.01-0.15; y + z + w = 0.035-0.3; and d = 0.04-0.3. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the production of an oxide ion conductor comprising mixing powdered oxides of Ln1, A, Ga, B1 and B2 to form a first powdered mixture; calcining the mixture at 500-1300 deg C for 1-10 hours to form a calcined powder; mixing a powdered oxide of B3 with the calcined powder to form a second powdered mixture; molding the second powdered mixture to give a molding of predetermined shape; and sintering at 1200-1600 deg C for 0.5-20 hours.
